Orange Jacket:
This does not need to be too fancy (the $15 one on Amazon works fine!) But it is needed for hunting season. Sometimes we will use it on warmer rainy days too! We do prefer the jackets instead of bananas, as the bananas tend to fall off and not provide that much coverage.
Winter Jackets:
We find that most dogs are a little more comfortable in the winter with a cozy jacket! It helps keep the snow away from their body, break the wind and keep in a little more body warmth!
After checking out all sorts of different jackets and truly seeing what works on the trail and and what doesn't, we have a couple buying tips:
1) We love Ruffwear! Though there are lots of great jackets on the market, if we are going to choose one to recommend that will work well for every dog we say...Ruffwear! They tend to make the most reliable outdoor doggie gear that truly is "performance-wear for dogs"! Check out their array of jackets here!
2) In general, durability is key! Look for something that is canvas with a lining as it tends to hold up best! Avoid Down or "puffy" jackets as the thin outside layer tends to inevitably get snagged by a stick or thorn and then suddenly there are feathers everywhere!
3) Clips or zippers, not Velcro! Look for a jacket that closes with clips or zippers, not Velcro. We have not come across many Velcro closures that stay fastened the entire hike, as snow and fur tend to get in there prevent the Velco from working. Half way through the hike your pup's jacket will turn into a cape!
3) Short pups need something to keep their tummy warm! The closer your pup is to the ground, the more tummy coverage they need! We love the Ruffwear Climate Changer for those little guys and gals. Its a fleece jacket, that has a step through and side zipper. It wraps around their whole body, keeping them extra warm! (for extra cold days pair it with a top coat!)
Boots:
We have finally found dog boots that work! Its ammmaaaazing! And boy were they needed. Dogs that have long fur tend to get snow build up between their toes and they hate it! Even dogs with short fur sometimes need boots on extra cold days just to stay warm and comfy.
We recommend www.dogbooties.com
"330 Denier Cordura Booties" with the "Velstrech" closure.
Order them online, or let us know if you're interested. We usually place a bulk order at the start of winter.
*we do not receive any money from dogbooties.com, we just really like them!
